to make up his mind whether or not to give them the resources they need
for survival.&lt;/span&gt;

by soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan, ask us to please pray for
their safety because each day things get worse, and they don&amp;#39;t know
when they are going to get the help they need. &amp;#160;Pastor Ed Boston, Of
Hope Wesleyan Church in Hope, IN works with deployed soldiers and
veterans through an on-line ministry called Do The Right Thing. &amp;#160;He has
confirmed the stories and the concerns of those currently serving.&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #f4f4f4; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;These brave men and women went where they were told to go and are
doing their very best, so how deranged is it to send them there as
sitting ducks while the elite politicians play golf in between paying

taking over 1/6 of our economy through socialized healthcare! &amp;#160;All the
while, as if they are invisible, the President is completely ignoring

last month or so, I&amp;#39;ve had the privilege of living with a bunch of
people to whom I would give that classification - men and women who are
in the war zone, putting their lives on the line every day. &lt;/span&gt;

conclusion that there are three main reasons why winning in Afghanistan
is vital to our nation and to all those who claim the Christian faith.
(Let me be clear that I don&amp;#39;t count those two groups as one and the
same, but neither are they mutually exclusive.)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;Two of the reasons we need to win are practical, and one is philosophical. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;1. The Taliban&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;
If the world body were to abandon Afghanistan tomorrow, the country
would revert to Taliban rule in very short order. This isn&amp;#39;t because
the Afghan people necessarily desire to live under extreme Sharia law.
But without anyone to protect them from the Taliban, these brutal
extremists will have free reign over much of the country, with the
Panjshir valley a notable exception.
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;The opium trade would flourish, giving the Taliban millions in cash
with which to extend their military reign of terror, and America&amp;#39;s
enemies like Al Qaeda would have won a vital strategic location from
which to plot and execute attacks on our interests around the globe. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. Opium&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
Ninety percent of the world&amp;#39;s illegal opium comes from Afghanistan. Not
only does every kilo of heroin produced there materially benefit those
who have sworn to destroy us, every kilo actually DOES possibly destroy
some small part of Western civilization by ruining lives that might
otherwise be productive. &lt;/span&gt; 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;We need to be in Afghanistan for the same reason we need to be in
Colombia - and have been for more than two decades. Heroin is an
insidious weapon that poisons free societies. We need to be investing
heavily in countering this threat around the world - not just in
Afghanistan, but especially there. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3. Freedom&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;
For some people in America, saying &amp;quot;we&amp;#39;re over there fighting for
freedom&amp;quot; has become a worn-out phrase since 9/11. But from a Christian
standpoint, consider this: There isn&amp;#39;t a single established Christian
church in Afghanistan today. About 99 percent&amp;#160;of all Afghans are
Muslim. &lt;/span&gt; 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #eeeeee; font-size: 1.25em;&quot;&gt;And they should have every right to BE Muslim if that is what they
choose, but that&amp;#39;s the point - there is no choice in Afghanistan today.
If an Afghan wants to be Buddhist, or gnostic, or Christian, or
anything other than Muslim, he either hides his beliefs or potentially
forfeits his life. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

KABUL, Oct. 4 -- Firing rockets and rifles, Taliban militiamen attacked
American and Afghan military outposts in a daylong siege on Saturday
that killed eight U.S. soldiers and two Afghan security forces in one
of the deadliest battles in months, according to U.S. and Afghan
officials.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The fighting began early Saturday morning and raged throughout the
day in a remote region of eastern Afghanistan in Nuristan province,
which borders Pakistan. Staging their attack from steep mountainsides
that overlook the outposts in the valley below, on a morning when
weather made visibility poor, the Taliban fighters attacked the small
American and Afghan bases using rifles, machine guns, grenades and
rockets, according to U.S. military officials.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By Sunday morning, when the U.S. military made the attack public in
a statement, the area was &amp;quot;largely secure but I do think there is still
some activity,&amp;quot; said Capt. Elizabeth Mathias, a U.S. military
spokeswoman.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In addition to the eight soldiers killed, several others were
injured, said Rear Adml. Gregory J. Smith, but he did not specify the
number. The American soldiers called in ground reinforcements, along
with attack helicopter, airplanes and surveillance drones during the
fighting. U.S. forces eventually repelled the attack while inflicting
&amp;quot;a significant amount of casualties&amp;quot; on insurgents, Smith said.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Due to the &amp;quot;very challenging terrain,&amp;quot; the insurgents had &amp;quot;pretty
effective firing positions,&amp;quot; Smith said. &amp;quot;It was obviously a very, very
difficult day.&amp;quot;
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
&amp;quot;Virtually everything that could be thrown at it was thrown at it,&amp;quot; Smith said of the American response to the attack.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The U.S. military said it was not immediately clear how many
insurgents were involved in the fighting. The attack involved Taliban
fighters and appeared to be led by a local commander of the
Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin insurgent group, which is run by Gulbuddin
Hekmatyar, a former mujaheddin leader during the Soviet war in
Afghanistan during the 1980s.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The attack took place in a sparsely populated area of forested
mountains near the town of Kamdeysh. The deputy police chief of
Nuristan province, Mohammad Farouq, said the insurgents intended to
seize control of the Kamdeysh area and that hundreds took part in the
fighting. He said more than 20 Afghan soldiers and police have gone
missing since the fighting began and may have been taken hostage.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;quot;Americans always want to fight in Afghanistan,&amp;quot; said Zabiullah
Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, who took credit for the attack by
telephone. &amp;quot;If the Americans want to increase their troops, we will
increase our fighters as well.&amp;quot;
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He said the battle began about 6 a.m. Saturday and involved 250
Taliban fighters. He claimed that dozens of American and Afghan
soldiers were killed, along with seven Taliban fighters. Mujahid also
claimed that the district police chief and intelligence chief were
among the hostages, but that could not be confirmed.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Farouq, the deputy police chief, said the attack, the biggest his
province has seen, was highly organized and began by taking out the
police radio system. &amp;quot;Since the attack began I&amp;#39;ve been unable to
communicate with the police chief. We are still trying to find out
where he is,&amp;quot; Farouq said.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The American soldiers from this outpost were scheduled to depart the
area as part of the new U.S. strategy to focus on securing areas with
larger populations. Capt. Mathias said the soldiers at the outpost were
not expected to leave this month and had not yet begun to prepare for
their departure when they came under attack. Smith, who did not specify
the number of American soldiers at the outpost, said such isolated
bases at times have only &amp;quot;limited impact&amp;quot; against the insurgents.
